Track Name: Jane (Once We Were Golden)
I went to an all night diner
On the east end of town
With the coffee smeared tables wiped down

by a proud single mum
With as many jobs as she has kids
Her boyfriend left her in the sticks
In 2006

And even though it was the night
I picked a table she just wiped
She pulled out all the coffee cups
With a desperation sigh

I touched her arm, she turned her head
And I asked her for her name
And with a wry but relived smile
She told me it was Jane

We took a train down to the coast
Where the sand was made of stone
Your interest seemed injured
But it beat being alone

You played the victim all along
Like when old frank, he hit your son
like the first time you heard "Dave and Angela"
You were getting high alone

But I held you by the pier
Then I went to score an eighth
I was never coming back baby, you found out way too late

I snuck my number in your winter coat
That I helped you leave behind,
No pressure, dearest janey
you can call me if you like

And you said
Oh my god, this must be wrong
Once we were so golden but tonight you're gone
And I wish you would stab me at the fire
To break me from this feeling that I was sure would save my soul

You said all your love had gone
And the past fell from your hands
I said the world has seen more trouble
Than you and I could understand

Still, you stopped talking so loud
And you stopped feeling so proud
You only did what you were told baby
And not what you were allowed

So back at the diner
where you never said it out
where you kept your heart a secret safe from everyone around

even your younger wondering soul
who is back out on his own
so you went out back and wrote your story
your hopeless fight for love and glory
one last shot at not being alone.
